User Password at boot up

I recently upgraded from Win 98 to Win XP. Everything was working fine for a while and then one day when I turned my computer on there was a little blue prompt that requested a user password. I have called gateway and searched the Microsoft Support site. I found that I need to create boot disks but still cannot bypass the user password prompt. Is there a defalt password or a way to bypass this prompt. I have made the 6 boot disks and am ready to use them to correct this problem. Can anyone help!
Thanks

Sounds a lot to me like a BIOS password, not a Windows password. Check
your motherboard manual for instructions on how to reset this password,
or call Gateway back and ask them how to do it.

Sounds like someone dropped into your system BIOS and
entered a startup password. Do you have children or
cronies at work that would play a practical joke on you?

I'm thinking your OS is fine. You need to get access to
your BIOS to turn it off. Ask around or try guessing
with standard, non-secure passwords like first/last names
of you, your kids, your pet, your favorite team...
