I just loaded a new Compaq Desktop. In Control Panel | Users I named the
main (and only) user "Paul". But on the Windows explorer, in Documents &
Settings, my account shows up under the name "Compaq_User". Why is this the
case?

Because changing the name only changes the name on the Welcome screen,
the Start menu and in User accounts it does NOT change the User name.

If you want to have your account to be Paul then create a new User
Account named Paul. Yuo will need to transfer your files and settings
to the new account or start afresh. See:-

You need to create a new user named "Paul" then log onto it at least once,
then delete the user "Compaq_User". Changing the user name from
"Compaq_user" to "Paul" will only change the user name, it will not rename
the folders associated with it.
