user name "user"

Hello,
Can anyone tell me why logging into windows XP SP2 the user name comes up as
"user" instead of the actual name used/placed into the user account (only one
user called XXX on this computer)? It’s not hard to change, but it is
annoying to have to change it when there is no "user" account. In this
environment "user" will work though. I work for a city fire department which
requires our engine computer to be properly logged on for our communications
to work.

AL,

When you change the name of the only User account via User Accounts in
the Control Panel it changes back to User ?
Are there any Scheduled Tasks set up to run under User ?
In Control Panel open Scheduled Tasks to see if that's the case.

Mo,

No, if I were to go ahead and log in as “user†I can look at the User
Accounts and see the correct name(not "user"): as if I were properly logged
in. Basically the only place I can see “user†is in the log-in screen. There
is no “user†account.

The only thing I see in Scheduled Tasks is “Add Scheduled Tasksâ€

AL,

Right click the Taskbar and choose Task Manager.
Click the Processes tab.
At the bottom left hand of the window put a mark next to 'Show processes
from all users'
Under the 'User Name' column see if User is listed or the correct name is.

In addition, with Task Manager open, click Shut Down on the menu bar at
the top and see what name is listed for ' Log Off _____'

Mo,
The answer to your previous post is yes. I do see the name “User†instead
of “E41†(E41 is the actual log-in name) for several processes. (I am logged
in as E41)

As to your second post, when I do A LOG-OFF it states “E41 is logged on as
(Computer name)\userâ€
When I do the same on a different computer it states “You are logged on as
(Computer name)\RES41â€
Why the difference from the computer that works correctly (“You are
logged…â€) compared to the one I’m having problems with (“E41 is logged…â€)
Thanks
Al

Hmmm ... could be just a glitch or it could be something nasty going on.
What about -

Typing 'SET' at a commandprompt should give you the authoritative lowdown on
who's in the driving-seat. It should also tell you which userprofile folder
is in use.

I can see three possible issues here:

One, that the 'Fast User Switching' service is active, and the user 'user'
has never been properly logged-off. If so, disable this service.

Two, the user-description (In control panel>system) is 'User' while the
actual account is called E41. In this case 'User' will appear on the start
menu, instead of E41.

Three, the account has been renamed at some time. This is a dubious thing to
do, since it leaves you with a profile-folder that still has the old name.
The only proper way to rename a user is (unfortunately) to create a new
account.

As a matter of interest my policy for single-user standalone computers is
that the local account is always called 'user.' Personalising such a computer
is simply asking for headaches when the user changes (or marries!) or the
machine has to be swapped-out.

First of all Thanks to Mowgreen and Anteaus for your inputs.
Second, the account was renamed at one time and this appears to have been
the cause.
I renamed the original account back to “user†and then created a new
administrator account with the name I needed. Then I deleted the “userâ€
account and this cleared up the Log-In Issue .

Thanks a bunch!
