This is about my p-to-p type home network which quits working.
The problem symptom is that when I attempt to log on a pc in the
network, a log-on dialogue is displayed but the User Name field in the
dialogue is grayed so that I can not enter user name. It used to work so
I wonder what has changed.
Please help.

What OS / file sharing is used by the "server" (computer that you're accessing)?
Windows XP Home, XP Pro with Simple File Sharing, XP Pro with Advanced File
Sharing? Know the differences!

What name is pre filled into the grayed out User Name field? Does that account,
on the server, have network access activated? Does the password on the server
match that on the client?

Thanks for tons of information on network. I have saved them for my
future reference.

The breakthrough was made when IP of the problem server was changed from
static to DHCP allocated one. After having seen it working the IP was
reverted back to a static IP but the problem has not come back so far.

The server OS is Windows XP Pro and I used to use Advanced File Sharing
but I also tried Simple File Sharing during this trouble shooting.
ComputerName\Guest was seen in the grayed ID field.
The problem has been resolved for now but may come back since I do not
know the root cause of the problem.
