User Logon Problems... Really strange

I have a Sony Vaio PIII running Windows XP Home.. and system will boot up to the welcome screen and let each user attempt to logon, but then it brings up the desktop for a split second and logs out..
I have not been able to get in through Safe Mode Administrator... or even get system to boot to command prompt..

XP has been activated and running for over a year on this machine. I am guessing it is something in the win.ini file, as this is the last file modified before it stopped letting users log on. (by checking using a dos boot disk) I am now wondering if this is a virus based problem. as there are no error messages or missing file messages. It just starts to come up, and then immediatly says "saving user settings" and goes back to the welcome screen

I'm having the same issue with my Sony FXA36 now about 2 year old. The issue occured in the last 2 days. I had attempted to download some spyware removal software
