I tried using the user level security wizard without sucess ( see earlier
thread) but managed to set up the security manually. My problem now is that
although access will ask me for a user name and password and will log me in,
it doesn't apply the restrictions I selected.

Can anyone please advise me on this?

We need more to go on than that, Peter. What restrictions have you
attempted to apply and what was the outcome?

Hi Keith thanks for your reply. The picture has changed a bit since the
original thread! I now find that I can only get in as an administrator. Here
is the story as it is now! I first created another mdw file. I then
created a new group. I set the permissons for the group to only allow
viewing permisions of tables, forms, reports etc. I removed all permissons
from the administrator group. I then created a new user and allocated them
to the new group. Up to here all ok.

When I attempt to login now I find that the administrator user name and
password is accepted but not those of the user. I get message box saying
"not valid account name or password. I then tried resetting the password for
the user, but find access will not accept the password change. It tells me
that the old password is not valid.

I'm completely stumped on this one. On the face of it, it looks like an
easy task. What have I done wrong?

When you create a new user, it's password is initially blank.
I then tried
resetting the password for the user, but find access will not accept
the password change. It tells me that the old password is not valid.

Resetting the password, does not require you to enter the old password.
Just select the username and hit reset - that will change it to blank.

Peter,

I'm not sure I completely understand the scenario. You say you removed
permissions from the 'Admins' group but you would need that group for, well,
admin. I don't think you have done this if your admin username & password
are letting you in.

As an administrator you can clear the password of the other user without
entering the old one. To set the password you would have to be logged on as
that user.

Have you read the MS Access Security FAQ? If you haven't then I would
suggest it's essential reading. There's a link to it on my website along
with a step-by-step example. Be sure to back up your files before you start
in case of an unrecoverable up-cock.

Keith.
