I have Windows 2000 Pro SP-4 in a recent clean install. After installing MS
Office 2000 Pro as Admin during the rebuilding process, I get flooded with
MS Installer attempts with either of two errors when opening any Office
program in my normal Power User profile. There are no other users except
for the system defaults.
1) The Installer starts.
2) After a few seconds I get error 1706, no valid installation source.
a. If I click "OK" this process repeats from 2-14 times, depending on
the program and what I'm trying to do.
b. If I click data1.msi on the installation disk I get the following
message: The Administrator has set policies to prevent this installation.
Please see your System Administrator for instructions. (That would be me.)
-The Windows installation was strictly default. Office 2000 had only
minor changes from default, namely:
i. I set a few extra features to "Run on first use".
ii. I set Clip Art and graphics to "Run from CD."
3) When all this is done, I get a working program, but the rigmarole starts
all over when I call certain features from within any Office program. Help
is the worst.
4) I set no restrictive policies for my personal account (Power User).
My setup:
MS Windows 2000 updated to SP-4 via Windows Update, from SP-2 (disk). All
critical and recommended updates installed.
MS Office 2000 Pro update to SP-3 from SP-1 (disk), plus 2-3n tools that I
use.
I am the only user and work as Admin only when required to do so.
My hardware:
AMD Thunderbird 1.4 GHz, 512MB PC2100 DDR RAM (266Mhz, effective). More on
request.
This is a stand alone computer connected to the Internet via cable
modem/NIC.
