User Interface Design Question

I want to provide the user with a way to modify a product detail. This is to
enter a new sub-product or a modification to an existing sub-product. I
could make 2 buttons - 1 for new and 1 for modification. Or just one button
with a choice of new or modify - with a drop-down box perhaps. It wouldn't
require a form - there is only one small detail to define in either case.
I'm far from a user interface expert, so I'd appreciate any advice on the
"best" way to do this.

Often data on the Many side of a relationship is displayed in a
subform. The subform can allow editing of existing items and can have
a * line at the bottom, where the user can enter a new item.
