Hello all.

I am very new to Windows 2000 Pro which is installed on 7 machines where I
have just started working. I have some questions regarding the OS which I
hope you can help me with.

Background - 7 PCs running W2kPro. No server. All connected to a gateway
(with DSL connection), but I have enabled static IP addresses. All drives
are NTFS.

What I want to do - I want the gateway machine to function as a mini
server - without having to install a Windows Server OS! The ICS side of
things is fine, but I would like there to be 3 or 4 different groups of
users. Obviously Admin, then staff. When someone from the Staff group logs
on, in explorer I would like them to have access to the drive on the gatewyy
machine (well, 1 directory of it at least). That is where all their files
will be held (meaning they can work on any machine in the room). If
possible, I would like to "hide" the local C drive as well.

Standard group users need to have the staff area hidden, but be able to
access the "Public Downloads" folder of the gateway machine.

Is it possible to do this using Win2000Pro without a Windows server? If so,
what programs do you use? I don't know how to change any group policies at
present.......

Thanks in Advance,
Robin

This is not a Group Policy question. I will answer your question for

you, but you should post in a "Windows 2000 Pro" group. What you need

to do is go to the gateway computer and setup some shared folders. It

sounds like the folders are already there, so all you need to do is

right click on the folder and go to "sharing or security" Then from

there you can hit the "Permissions" button and this will set permission

for who is able to connect to the shared folder. The security tab will

set permission on what they can do once they are connected to the

folder. Since you do not have domain setup, you cannot create global

groups. You will need to setup local groups on the "server/gateway pc"

and create local members with the same user names/passwords as the users

you want to enable access to. To map to the shared folders from the

other computers, you can RIGHT click on MY COMPUTER>map network drive

\\<servername>\sharename It may be a little confusing for you if you

have never done this before. Good luck!

Thanks for that Philip. I will get to work on that today. I didn't realise
this was the wrong group to ask such questions, so I'll post to a Win2kPro
group in future.

Thanks for giving me the info though. I understand most of it. The bit
that sounds tricky is the setting up of the local groups on the gateway PC.
I wonder if it is done in the same way as on the other local machines?

Once again, thank you for your time thinking about this for me!
