User Defined Function - reformulated repost of an earlier question

I've done a bit of research and now believe that - as Allan
recommended - a UDF apporach would be a more reasonable alternative to
writing long convoluted formulae.

As such, my question is as follows...

I need to develop a method of scheduling many employees based say, a
drop-down menu choice of possible schedules. Based on a start date and
a known working day rotation, a rolling schedule can be displayed well
into the future.

The possible days when an employee could be working and then off is
as
follows and where working days are shown followed by a dash and then
the number of days off...
10-4
10-1-10-8 (In this schedule, after 10 days of work, the employee
takes
a one day break and returns for 10 more working days followed by 8
days off)
20-8
21-7
14-7
14-14
5-2

From your description, I can't tell what you want and I don't see the
prior so..
