User & Admin password issues

I purchased a new computer last with with Microsoft XP Professional and
Microsoft Office Professional 2003 SP1 preinstalled.

I opened Access 2003 for the first time this morning. I setup four new user
accounts; two with administrator rights and two with user rights.

I proceeded to do a File Open to an existing database and was prompted for a
login and password. I tried each of the combinations multiple times without
success. I then tried to do a File New Blank Database and had the same
issues.

At this point in time, I am unable to work in any capacity in Access. How
do I fix this?

Try closing Access, finding all files named system.mdw on your PC,
renaming them to something else (say system.mdw.OLD), then trying
again. I think (but am not sure) that Access will create a new
system.mdw if none exists when it starts.

Do not *delete* any copies of system.mdw, since it is conceivable that
they are used by other databases on your PC.

Note that you would normally *not* secure a database, by creating new
accounts in the standard (default) workgroup file. You need to start by
creating a *new* workgroup file. Acquire, read & study a suitable
document describing the process; eg. the Access Security FAQ.

Oddly enough, a search did not return any system.mdw files on this PC. So, I
am even more confused! As a matter of fact, a search of the entire hard
drive did not return a .mdw file.

Any more advice?

But if you have "opened Access 2003" and "set up four new user
accounts" and "proceeded to do a File Open to an existing database and
was prompted for a login and password", then, there *must* be at least
one mdw file on your PC. None of those things would be possible without
an mdw file. So you must have done something extra and/or different to
what you have described, unless I am missing something obvious.

Cheers,
TC
