Hi have just set up windows server 2000. I have 3 users, two of them work
great but one is not working. The network is not even picking up the 3rd
users computer...(which happens to be mine) I can log into the network, get
internet and all other things, but when I want to get the files that are
shared on the server, all i can get is files that are on my computer under
another users. I am not sure what I can do to fix this. My settings under
admin are set up the same as the other users, I have actually a bit more and
am set up under administraton settings as well. I tried removing those
setting to see if it would make a difference...nothing. I have spent the
whole day trying to get this to work, and logically it should work....but no,
my computer is not showing up on the servers file system and I can not access
anything. Is there a way I can delete my account on my computer and try to
start over? Is their maybe a setting in the admin file that I should be
altered. The other two computers can share files on the server and each
others.....please help!!

Bubblez,

I'll try to help, but I'm having a hard time following you. It's not
clear where you are logging on, or how you are trying to access the
shared resources.

Did you setup Active Directory? or a stand alone server? Are the three
computers you mention in the domain? a workgroup? Are there user
accounts for each user? where did you set them up? When you logon,
where do you logon? to the machine? to a domain? What OS is running on
the workstations?

Mail and internet connectivity are usually independant of domain
operations --you don't need to logon to the domain (or server) to
access them. While that's good news for confirming connectivity, it
doesn't give me any more insight.

What do you mean when you say your "computer is not showing up on the
servers file system"? There is a couple of things wrong with that
statement, I'm not trying to be
insulting, I'm just trying to better understanding of where you're at.

If you're uncertain about the difference between domains/workgroups
etc, that's ok, everyone starts somewhere. Just describe what you've
done to set up windows 2000 and we'll go from there.

Tim.Olsen

I orginally did not do anything, I just left it the way it was set up by
someone else. And bear with me I don't know a lot of the windows server,
just by what I have learnt over the last few days on setting up the users. I
only know how to change the user information..nothing more at this
time....All computers are using windows XP prof. My other two computer are
config to be users on the domain 2000 windows server, as well as my computer.
We have a file on the server that is used as a shared file (we are using
windows 2000 server as a shared file server). The other two computers log
into their account and if you go under network you can see the shared file on
the server and the shared file on the other computer....nothing is there for
my computer. When I log into my computer and the domain all is well, but
when I go into network I can only access a shared file that is presently on
my computer and have no access to any of the other shared files, in fact they
do not even show up on my computer. This problem existed as soon as I logged
into my computer on monday..friday my computer was working great..well at
least I think it was..because he but a link to the shared file on my
desktop....the only think that I had changed since the person installed my
server was config. one of the other computers with windows xp...I did not
make any changes to the servers settings.
Yesterday I tried deleting my user account, delete other used thinking that
maybe there were too many users on the systems, and because it goes alpha, my
user is Tammy so I thought that might be the problem...My user is also set up
as admin. so I removed that still nothing. My settings on my user account is
the same as the other users, but my computer is not showing on the server
domain. I hope I have explained this right.

What I also tried to do was remove my user name on my computer...but I was
not able to do so..and I am not realy sure how I can do that...I know how do
remove a user on the xp networking...but not with the server networking...
When I tried to remove my user name on the servers admin feature, it removed
it, but when I tried to re add it it would not let me...said a user already
existed.....so I am not sure where else I have to look to remove the user
information.

I also tried as a temp fix to make a share file on my computer and share it
with one of the other computers until my techie guy comes back in 5 weeks,
but no one else can see my computer on the system so I was not able to share
it.

As I said you have to bear with me...I am learning this damn server
stuff....I know how the network works with a small office and xp but I am
still learning the 2000 server stuff.

I hope you can help. I really need my computer to work today so I can get
some work done.

Tammy,

OK we need to find out if your user account, machine account, and the
server are all in "club".

That club is going to be either a domain, or a workgroup. For
simplicity, the difference between the two clubs is how well they've
organize their members. In a domain, members are centrally managed
--the club roster is stored in one place.

Members of the same club are granted access to club resources like
shared folders, printers using Access Control Lists. (ACL's). You see
just because you're in the club doesn't automatically give you free
access to all the club resources.

So on your Windows XP machine:
--Right click on My Computer.
--Choose properties
--Choose the Computer Name Tab
--Select the bottom button: "Change" the text next to this button reads
"to rename this computer or join a domain click change"
--On the "Computer name change" dialog, it will name either a domain or
workgroup.
-- Write down the name and the type. That's the name and type of your
club.
-- click cancel. (very important)

Repeat those steps on your windows 2000 box, and at least one of the
other XP workstations. Do they all match exactly? what type are they?

If they all match, that's good, but it means we then need to look at
your user account. We want to make sure you trying to get to club
resources with a valid club membership. If you have a valid club
membership, we need to check if you have access to club resources
(shared folders).

How to check those things varies depending on your club type.
So are your computers (and server) in a (the same) domain? or a (the
same) workgroup? or some mix?

Hi Tim,

I think we are going to scrap the server at this time....when my two other
computers restarted they can not longer log into the server. I am going to
wait until my techie guy gets back and let him fix the problem...I wish to
thankyou for your help though. It is just getting too complicated and too
much time is being loss from my everyday job.

Hi Tim,

all the computers are on the same domain, can you help me to find out how to
make sure all the informtion is shared. It seems like it is not shared with
my computer. Everyone else (2 other computers) have full access to the
domain, as well on the server it has full access to the other computers.

I hope this makes sense

Tammy
