I have two XP Pro machines networked wirelessly. At first, they were on the
same workgroup and i wasn't being prompted for a password or user name at
all when i connected to shared files. now, they're on different workgroups
and i'm being prompted for a user name and password (which is what i want),
but the user name comes up as guest and it's grayed out, so i can't change
it.
is this normal? do i have to connect using the guest account? i would like
to be able to connect to the client using any account on that machine.
Thanks.

On each machine, go to the Control Panel and click on Folder Options. Go to
the "view" tab. Uncheck the "Use simple file sharing" box. Now, for all
your file shares, you will be able to click on the permissions box and
specify which users should have access.

Also, if you'd like to prevent anyone from connecting remotely as a guest,
you may want to disable the guest account. To do this you should
right-click on the My Computer icon and select the "manage" option. Go to
Local Users and Groups. Select the guest user, right click, go to
properties, and check the "account is disabled" box.
