My XP Pro system has just decided, with no instigation
from me, as far as I know, to show (and wait at) the
logon screen "To Begin, click your user name".
I have been a single-user system, with no guests,
and now it has added "ASP.NET" as an optional user.

It sounds as though somebody somehow has succeeded in
invading my system and adding some user. Please let me
know how to delete this unwanted optional user, and
perhaps to identify its source if possible.

Thank you.

You installed the .NET Framework, either by itself, or as part of an application that requires it. The extra user account is normal, as the ..NET Framework uses it.

If you wish to log on your user account, automatically:

1) Click Start, Run and enter CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2
2) Select the user account you want automatically logged on (this avoids the Administrator account being selected by default)
3) Uncheck Users must enter username and password..........
4) Click Apply
5) In the next dialog, enter the password, if any, for the account you chose in Step 2
6) Ok your way out

Thank you, Doug; I'm sure you identified the source of
the problem. The solution, however, does not work in
all cases.

I went where you led me, and changed it so that it now has the box
unchecked, followed by 4 lines:

Username Group
Administrator Administrators
ASP.NET Users
William B. Lurie Administrators

Normally I will be running Thunderbird or Firefox, and
If I shut the system down with no programs running, I
believe I can say that it will boot next time without the
selection I objected to being presented.

However, if I shut down without closing those programs,
when I boot next time it forced me to make the selection
again.

If everything I'm describing is normal, I guess my next question
is, is there a way to avoid it? If the answer is, yes, by
deleting the ASP.NET line, what capability would I be losing?
I only have .NET because Windows Update installed it for me,
and I don't know what use it is altogether. Perhaps you can
give me a link to what it does and why I might want it.

Thank you.

The .NET Framework, v1.1, provides the runtime libraries for programs written with Visual Studio 2003. The .NET 2.0 Framework provides the same functionality for programs written in Visual Studio 2005.

More information on the .NET user account can be found here:

http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/aspdot.php

Unless you're writting applications that need it, its usually safe to delete this account.

When you use Norton Ghost 9 or 10 it installs dotnet.

That may be so, Richard, but I've been using the Ghost
in NSW 2006 Premier Edition for months, and this
annoying intrusion only started after the ASP thing
got installed.

I used to have to reformat at least once a month (because I use a lot
of programs & have a tendance to open too many), but since using it....happy
& ready to go all the time!!! (they are also a microsoft gold rated partner).
