When I enter this group I get an NNTP bug notice from alpine 2 stating the
message numbers are out of range 2000 - 1000 or similar numbers.

Are you using the Microsoft news servers? It sounds like you are not. Try
using msnews.microsoft.com (no username/password) instead.
