Hi

I have a 120Gb harddrive, approx. partitioned as:

C: 25GB
D: 15GB
E: 80GB

C: drive is causing me a little concern as when I look at the C: drive
properties it says that there is 11.9GB used. I've used tools such as
Treesize etc to break this down for me but these tools all say only around
3GB is used.

Can anyone tell me why the drive properties panel says 11GB used while other
disk management utilities say that around 3GB is used

It's driving me mad!

Any help would be great

Thanks

There is a program called "Sequoia" this shows exactly
what is on your HD in a panel graph.
There is a lot of hidden system stuff on your OS
partition, there is the hibernation files and your page
files.
If you dont use Hibernation you can switch it off at:
Right click Desktop > Properties > Screen saver > Power >
Hibernate.
The Page file cant be switched off but you can shrink it
but if you go too far it will tell you , normally it is
1.5 times the size of your RAM. You can move it to
another partition if you want to at: Right click on "My
Computer" > Properties > Advanced > Performance >
Advanced > Virtual Memory > Change. This has its own help.
Also System Restore can take up a bit space. This can be
cleared (apart from the last entry) in disc cleaner.
Good Luck.

Hi Jo,

It may be "System Restore" that is eating the space. By default, SR is
allocated 12% of the drive for restore points. It is a hidden file and your
3rd party utilities may not recognize it.(I don't know about that). You
might try clearing SR and then see what it reports.

thanks guys !

it was System Restore that was using the 'unaccounted' for hd space

Once again... thanks!
