I just purchased a used computer from ebay. I knew it
didn't have an OS, so I got Windows XP to install it.
However, I just received the computer and the cd-rom is
not a installed. Is this normal or did I get ripped off?
Or do I just need to get a driver installed. If I just
need a driver, does it matter what kind? I don't even
know what brand of drive it is, the face plate just says
compact disc. Thanks for any help!

You didn't say, but do you know anything about the computer
hardware specs?

The device with the words "compact disk" is a CDROM, and
yes, you need drivers for it. If they are not included on
the motherboard BIOS, the computer may not be adequate to
run XP.

You need to turn the computer ON (boot) and open the BIOS.
If you don't have an operating system it should display a
text screen with the key to press to open the BIOS. If you
can set the Boot Sequence to the CDROM as first, then you
can put the XP CD in the drive and reboot, press any key to
boot from the CD and begin the installation.

And yes, you may have been ripped off. And that can be
"normal" on eBay.

If there's no OS on the computer, there's no way for drivers to be
installed, as there's nothing for them to be installed into. You wouldn't
have drivers on an empty hard drive, and that wouldn't do you any good
anyway, as you wouldn't be accessing them when you install XP anyway.

Maybe this isn't what you mean, though...

It might be better if you just say what you're trying to do and what's going
wrong.
