USE XP PRO?

I will be getting another computer shortly, (w/ NO O.S.)
and want to install XP PRO. I have many questions.

1)What to buy?...I see OEM, full oem, full retail. What
is the pro and cons for using or buying each? Which is
better?

2)Is a "full oem" version the same software as a full
retail?

3)Can I put XP on my new comp and then again on a third
one that I plan to buy a month later?

4)What is all the hype about registering. Can I install
and use the full software without registering w/Microsoft?

5)Can you still do live update without registering?

6)If I'm not allowed to use it on more than one computer,
that's fine, but how will they know? I ask this not so
much to use one copy for a million computers but in
curiosity on HOW Microsoft would KNOW...are they allowed
or have ways where they look into your computer (snoop)
and "verify" things??

7)If I buy a copy from EBAY or somewhere, what happens if
they lied about it not being registered. A friend told me
that it wouldn't matter as long as I just use it without
registering it. Is that true. How can I know if I have a
legal copy without necessarily letting Microsoft know
which copy I have?

8)If I want to also install Office pro 2003 do I need to
buy 3 copies for 3 home computers? That would be $1500
and seems a bit much (to put it nicely) for one poor soul
to put it on all his personal computers.

It is always best to go with the full version OEM can have
several small problems and is not widly supported my MS

2)Is a "full oem" version the same software as a full

NO, OEM is for new computer manufactures

3)Can I put XP on my new comp and then again on a third
one that I plan to buy a month later?
Yes, But it will not be legal. You need to hold a license
for each seat.

4)What is all the hype about registering. Can I install

No. You will need to register with MS. I suggest letting
the 30days runn out just incase you have to re-install

5)Can you still do live update without registering?
Yes. You can update but after the 30 days you will be
locked out of your OS

6)If I'm not allowed to use it on more than one computer,

No. They will not have to snoop. They will have your
information subitted that is directly related to your box.

As long as you have a legal cd "one with the ms logo" you
will be able to register it. If not you can always call MS

You will need to have licenses again per seat.

None are better and they are the SAME!
OEM versions are sold with NEW Computers.
Retail versions are available as Upgrades or Full.
In your case you need the Full Retail.
2)Is a "full oem" version the same software as a full
retail? Yes

3)Can I put XP on my new comp and then again on a third

No, you need to buy another copy for the other PC
4)What is all the hype about registering. Can I install

You do not need to register but you do need to Activate Windows.
5)Can you still do live update without registering? Yes

6)If I'm not allowed to use it on more than one computer,

If you do not activate Windows after 30 or so days then it
will disable Windows and you will no longer be able to use it.
If you activate it (either over internet or by phone), they will keep
a record of your Product Code etc

You can register it in your name, it doesn`t matter.
8)If I want to also install Office pro 2003 do I need to

Yes, you do need to buy 3 copies. Same principles of Windows apply to
Office. IF you don`t like the Cost go for an Alternative:
WordPerfect Office (which I use), Ability Office, Microsoft Works
or OpenOffice (free btw).

Umm no they are NOT the same. They contain the same SOFTWARE but the
LICENSE is different. An OEM copy for instance, can ONLY be used on the
machine on which it is first installed. It CANNOT be transferred to
another machine. A retail copy cam however.
