I am switching from Word Perfect 2000 to MS Word 2003.
In WP there is a setting for the tool bar in which you see each word as you
type it and it will either offer you spelling choices or it will offer you
thesarus suggestiosn just by clicking the down arrow. The word appears in
this little window and does not need to be highlighted. I used it a lot but I
cannot find this in MS word or even if this is available in their program.

There's no parallel feature in Word. But, Word does have other options,
which will require cultivating new habits.

Pressing Shift+F7 looks up the current word (i.e, the word that contains the
insertion point) in the thesaurus.

If you have Check Spelling as You Type (Tools - Options - Spelling &
Grammar, first option listed) enabled, Word will underline errant words.
Pressing the Options key (available on many Windows keyboards, displays the
options context menu, which is the same thing you'd get by right-clicking or
by pressing Shift+F10); when an errant word is at the insertion point,
pressing the Options key displays spelling choices for the errant word.
