I used to use Mightyfax once & am pretty sure that did it. The interface
defiinitely had a telephone keypad.

Eli,

One of the best sources for finding answers to questions is Google.com or
Groups.Google.com. To find the type of software you are seeking type in the
keywords;

telephone software

Mighty FAX is exactly what the name says, fax software and does not provide
voice connections. See the following site for more info;

If your modem supports that - yes it's possible.
i want to use the modem and the regular phone line that my pc is connected
to and to speak into the microphone, hear the other person from the speakers
and be able to answer phone calls with the computer.
is there a third party free app that can do that?

Check if you didn't get it with your modem CD. Otherwise e.g Cheyenne
BitWare supports this feature - but I don't remember if it's free :-(

My memory's failing. It was Quicklink Message Center, which came with my old
V90 modem.
I don't think it's available now (replaced by Hotfax) and only worked with a
voice modem.

Hey, guys, I have a great HotFax that I've never used except or FAX.
You mean I can 2-way phone over the Internet with it??????

It will never work because you are in the future. You need to either fix
your time/date, or fix your regional setting.

Although the OS will not work as a direct dial phone would XP does come with software that can connect you to another party and you can watch and talk to them. It's windows messenger and I use it all the time. In my case I have it on the tool bar at the top. It looks like two little green pawn chess pieces. Once your friends have the program installed you can then add them to your contact list and begin a video and audio session whenever they are on line, or you can do a remote application share where you can control the other persons computer and set it up or fix it over the internet, you can have many people join the conversation or just have it private. It has an audio tuning wizard and camera setup and everything. I use this all the time to talk to people all over the world. No long distance charges either. There are tons of plug ins that add extra options such as mail retrieval and so on. Good luck.

No, this was not IP based communications software. Some models of modem have the capability of interfacing with the sound card, and allowing you to use a mic/headset (if desired) to place handsfree telephone calls. It works just like your regular phone, and the better software packages had additional features like a software "answering machine", where voice messages are left on your computer. Multiple mail boxes, distinctive ring support and the like (for different announcements) might be supported.

i found this site as well:

1) Try at least to post using the correct date.
2) What kind of modem are you using? Some modems (external) have a speaker
button so they can be used as phones. You do not say however, what modem you
have.
