Hello,
I am brand new to Vista (24 hours) and I have never used a MS product for
email. My question is if I continue to use an alternative email client, will
the desktop search feature still work if searching for mail?

Perhaps not, in a test of the integrated SeaMonkey mail client here
(similar to Thunderbird).

However, within that client, search works fine. See http://mozilla.com
and http://mozilla.org.

If you include it's folders etc. in the search index I would
expect it to. "Program Files" is not, by default, search indexed.

I doubt it would be a good idea to put "Program Files" in it's
entirety in the index since it might clobber search performance.

Thank you. So, um how would I "include it's folders in the search index"?
(pardon my ignorance. I'm an artist, not computer whiz)

Me too... http://ptlslzb87.blogspot.com/
but I can read and use "help" facilities...

Start Menu > Help and Support > type "Search Index" in search box & enter.

Option 1. Improve Windows searches using the index: frequently asked
questions

See... "How do I add new files or locations to the index?"
and follow the instructions.

If you have a problem... post back or email me.
