I just installed xp on a brand new hard drive. My old hard drive has a lot of data and files on it that I would like to keep. I have installed it as the second drive on my computer and using "disk management" I can see it. But I can't access it through Windows Explorer. All of the information I've read says that I need to reformat it to let xp see it and use it. Is there any way around that? All I want to do is assign a drive letter to it and read the data from it.

When you right click on the drive in Disk Management, do you get the option
to make the drive active?
Disk Management.
Start> Run> diskmgmt.msc>OK.

No, the only choices are "delete partition" and Help. All other choices are greyed out

Hi

I assume that the new HD has been set to be a "slave" using the jumper. If so, it should show in Bios and be assigned a new drive no. Suggestion: ck. the jumper on the drive
