usbscan.sys (unknown) is needed

My scanner will not work at all. I have done so many troubleshooting with hp
and microsoft and nothing has helped. The problem is when I try to install
the hp software right after they tell you to connect the usb cable and window
comes up and says usbscan.sys (unknown) is needed. Can anyone help me figure
out what to do. Thank you so much, I have Windows xp professional 2002

All that and you never mention the model of the scanner.
