USB2 Unkown Device - Was Working Fine for Months!

Windows XP Pro SP2
A week ago I had windows update download the latest update as it is set
to do automatically. Despite the annoying 'reboot now' sign that came
up every 15 minutes, I hadn't rebooted yet as of this mroning, when my
Linksys WUSB54G disconnected from the network suddenly. I reconnected
and it worked for another 15 minutes and then the whole box froze up.
When I rebooted, the box did not detect the wireless adapter. I
unplugged and replugged and got a 'new USB device detected' followed
quickly by an 'unkown device.'
If I move the adapter to a USB1 port on the box, then it works, but it
was plugged into the USB2 port to support the speed.
I uninstalled the device, all the Linksys software and uninstalled all
the USB hosts as well, but after reinstalling, and reconnecting, I get
the same behavior. It won't work on the USB2 port.
The box is an HP workstation xw4100.
Can someone help?
thanks!

I am having the same sort of problem. I am trying to connect my USB 2.0 hard
drive enclosure to my laptop (whcih worked fine for months) but now I get a
code 10 error in computer management. I have tried to unistall/reinstall the
device with no luck. I think that there is a hotfix that Microsoft has but I
don't know where or how to get it.

Is this the problem? Another one of MS's screw-ups!

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 on a computer that is
running Microsoft Windows XP, the universal serial bus (USB) drivers do not
appear to update.

CAUSE

After you upgrade from Windows XP to Windows XP Service Pack 2, the USB
drivers appear with the earlier version numbers, even though the files have
been updated.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install Windows XP SP2, and then update the drivers
for the USB devices that are connected to your computer. To update these
drivers, follow these steps:

1.
Click Start, click Run, type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK.

2.
Double-click the type of device that you want to update.

3.
Double-click the specific device that you want to update.

4.
Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.

5.
Follow the instructions in the Hardware Update Wizard.

6.
Repeat steps 2 through 5 for each USB device.
