USB2 on XP ... need SP1???

I have a PC with a couple of front USB ports that are both USB2, yet
they won't function.

When I plug things into them, I get an error balloon stating a USB
malfunction.

In my device manager, I can see the ports shown as a USB2 hub.

The mainboard is of the MSI variety with a VIA chipset, having a
connecting lead form the board going to the front of the chassis. I
believe this is common on most boards?

Do I need XP Service Pack 1 installed to fully support these USB 2
ports? The rear USB ports on the machine are find, but they are USB1.1

I have loaded a USB driver off the mainboard accompanying CD, but that
has made no difference.

Advice welcome.

You require XP SP1 for USB 2.0 support.

Hi, TX2.

In addition to SP1, you also need the several fixes to ward off the Blaster
worm and other baddies. First, be sure your firewall and antivirus are
installed and working, then go to Windows Update and get your computer up to
date - for your own protection!

Do not want to argue RC but I have read several horror stories about SP1.
I've held off with SP1 and am counting on my firewall and av.. Would be
interested in hearing from people with bad results with SP1 and what they
had to do to bail out.

Hi Dannie,

Issues are always there, but XP SP1 is required anyhow for USB 2.0 support:
