USB2 external HDD dropping out

Is this normal? Sometimes the system won't recognise my USB2 external HDD at
all, and I have to switch it on and off a few times before it is recognised.
Sometimes it just "drops out" when the system did recognise it at first, but
then suddenly it's gone from Windows Explorer. It has done this
intermittently ever since I purchased it. Windows says there are no errors
on the drive. Using Win XP pro.

No is the short answer - it never has time to go on standby or suspend - I
use this HDD exclusively for backups, and it is switched on probably for no
more than 10 mins at any time.
