USB2/External Hard Drive Problems

When ever I connect my Western Digital USB/2 HD to my computer it locks up
the computer after about 10 seconds.

Any ideas why this may be happening, or suggestions how to trouble shoot
this issue?

You did not say how many GB's in size the external harddrive is, nor what
motherboard you are using.

Yes, I gave the MB (Abit KT7A), the external HD is 80Gbs.
