Hi
I have a Toshiba laptop that is a few years old. I suspect its USB is USB 1
but I am not sure.
2 questions:
1. How do I find out if it really is USB 1 or 2?
2. If it is USB 1, is there a way to add a USB 2 port to a laptop?

Thanks.

Jeff

Plug in a usb 2.0 device. The software will bitch that 'this will
work better if plugged into a USB 2.0 port'.
Also try http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html or Belarc Advisor.

Jeff, rt click MyComputer>select Properties>Hardware>Device Manager>USB
Controllers. If you see any that say "Enhanced"
USB Controller then you are USB 2.0 capable. If not then just do a google
search for Adding USB 2.0 to Laptop.

Click Start, right click on My Computer and select properties. Click the
hardware tab and then device manager. At the bottom look for USB
controllers and see if you find the word "enhanced", if you do then it is
USB 2. You can find addon pcmcia cards like the one below:

It won't if USB2 is not available, thus defeating what the OP wants.

This may do the job, but is not guaranteed as not all USB2 divers bother to
include the word enhanced in their description.

If you can't find enhanced, then proceed as follows.

1. Open the device manager as detailed above.

2. Go to the USB devices right at the bottom of the tree and expand. There
should be one or more root hubs shown. Right click on the bottom most one
and select 'Properties'. Now select the 'Power' tab. This should show the
number of available ports. If the number of ports equals or exceeds the
number of physical ports on your laptop (AND is greater than 2) then you
have a laptop capable of high speed communication. If only 2 ports are
shown and you have more than 2 physical ports then you only have a USB1
capable laptop.

USB2 capable ports are easy to add as they are available in both Cardbus (PC
Card or PCMCIA) card and Express card format. However, if you have an
express card slot you must also have USB2.
