USB1.1 to USB2.0

NG,

I want to upgrade my USB1.1 to USB2.0, but my existing is 'onboard' my
Dell M/C and does not allow me to add a new USB card. Is there a an adapter
available that I can plug into my USB1.1 port to give me a USB2.0 output
port?

Short answer: No.

USB2.0 will fall back to USB1.1 if not all devices support USB2.0, but
you won't be able to take advantage of the higher speeds of USB2.0

Why can't you install a new USB card?
 
You cannot add something on to a USB 1.1 to get USB 2.0. The source
specifications is for USB 1.1, and that is what the bottleneck will be.

If your computer has a spare slot, you can add a USB 2.0 card. Some mother
boards, depending on the BIOS, and the operating system characteristics (if
Win 98 is used), will not work well with USB 2.0.

Just because you have USB 1.1 built into the motherboard doesn't mean that
will prevent you from adding a USB 2.0 card - I have both on my machine. All
you need is a spare PCI slot to plug the card into (and the know-how of how
to do that - or a computer shop that's willing to fit the card they sell
you).

Yes, but his problem is that like a lot of dell boxes his doesn't have AGP
or PCI slots.

He wouldn't need an ADP slot to install a USB card, and I haven't seen a
DELL box in my life without PCI slots.

There could be only a couple and it could be they're already taken, but
if so, and if the project is important there may be other alternatives
(like switching to USB versions of whatever components need to be
removed and connecting them to the USB card)

Where there is a will, there is often a way.
 
I've tried fitting a USB2.0 Card into a spare PCI slot but it crashes my
system.With this info I contacted Dell who state that because of the onboard
USB setup I cannot fit a USB2.0 alongside the existing USB1.1.- it looks
to me as though I need a new motherboard!

That sounds bogus. Over in the Dell groups
lots of people, including me, have installed USB
cards along side onboard USB. That said, I did
have to move the card around to a different slot
for windows to detect it properly. Some sort of
IRQ issue I think. Mine's a Dell 4100.
 
Below is Dell's response to my problem!


'With reference to the issue as you have mentioned your system
currently has USB 1.1 and it is not possible to upgrade to USB
2 as the USB controller is integrated to the chipset of the motherboard.
It is not possible to upgrade the version of the USB in your
system either by means of drivers or BIOS updates.'

As I mentioned before, remove the card and try in a different
PCI slot. Dell's reply is limited to their hardware only,
it doesn't say you can't install a PCI card.
