My usb ports where working fine until I tried to connect a game controller. I discovered that the controller driver was not xp compatable so I uninstalled and took it back to the store. now my usb ports will not work. I can no longer use my usb track ball mouse. when I connected it to the computer the usb detected it and then immediately gave me a message saying the device failed to install. HELP!! I have already used up my installs for my version of XP so I cannot reformat. what else can I do???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I have nothing to offer except, you can re-install XP as many times as you
want. There is no limit on the number of times you can re-install on the
same machine.

The only limit I have seen: 2 Internet activations. Then, you will have
to phone Microsoft's activation telephone number and request the activation
code by phone.

Have you removed all USB ports/hubs/devices from Device Manager and reboot
to let XP re-detect them????

Please don't resort to a format and OS reinstall every time you run into a
problem. Doing so requires a lot of effort, you will loose data if you don't
do a backup to other media, you will have to re-install other software
afterwards, and it is almost always unnecessary.

And posting your real address in newsgroups opens you up to tons of spam
mail.

I already did the reformat which did fix another issue I
had but the usb ports are still not working properly. I
guess they have gone out. I just waisted $30 on a
controller I can't use. Thanks any way

WIndows detects the ports just fine but anything I
connect to the the ports it says the device has a problem
and can't be installed. The first controller I bought I
took back to the store and it installed just fine on the
computers in the store. The replacement controller I got
is doing the same thing so it has to be my ports.
