Hello,

I've read that there is a known issue with XP and the SIS 7001 USB Host
Controller which neither SP1 nor the New Registry Patch corrects. My machine
is apparently experiencing this problem.......everytthing USB except the
printer is "Unknown". So since MS has control over the USB drivers for my
mainboard and the current drivers seem to be at fault ...... where do I find
a solution? I've checked all over the MS FAQs and KBs and tried everything I
could find without success.

Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated.

Unfortunately the particular chipset is notorious for problems. I don't
know if there is anything you can really do about it. I gave up on my
old notebook that had that chipset. It only ran a very limited range of
devices. I could not run a HP Scanner, USB hub (bus or self powered),
USB ADSL modem (D-Link DSL-200) Canon S400SP printer, Brother HL-1430
printer to name a few.

From what I found, it is not something that you can really do anything
about.

When I got my replacement notebook recently I made sure that it did not
have a SiS chipset.

As to what you can do. If you have a notebook with a free PC Cardbus
slot, you might look at getting a USB PC Card adaptor. You can get them
with USB and Firewire. If it is a desktop, it might be a case of
getting a USB adaptor card.
