Hello,

whenever i plug a USB network card into my computer, it will hang on boot for about 30 secconds.

Netgear MA111 (B) - Hang on boot for 30 secconds, internet works fine.

Belkin F5D7050 (G) - Hang on boot for 1 min, 95% of the time, the internet does not work at all.

I am going to try reformatting the HDD soon and only putting the Netgear drivers on, as it is the Belkin USB adaptor that causes the most problems.

Although both of them work fine on other pc's.

The only thing i can think of is that my USB ports are only running at USB1.1 at the moment as i need to upgrade to SP2 before i can run at USB2.

I havent upgraded yet because i have only just found the Netgear card, and until then i couldnt get on the net at all.

Have you got any suggestions?

I really need help with this problem ASAP.

Thanks,

KGB

Try going into the BIOS and make sure "boot from LAN" or something similar is not enabled... that would give the same sort of problem on boot.

You do mean it hangs whilst still in the POST stage?

It loads my background and the first few icons in the tasakbar, then freezes before the network icon loads.

in the hardware profiles list, the USB controler is listed unter unknwn hardware. i am hoping that installing the USB drivers in SP2 will help my problem

Oh Great! I installed SP2 then my computer got to the windows boot-up screen, and restarted. it never started at all.

I dont know why. i have reformatted now, and am going to put SP2 on when i get home today.

Sorry for posting 4 times in a row.

I REALLY need help, when i have the Netgear USB adaptor in, i get the BSOD a lot of the time when i start up or shut down.

Please help me if you can!

KGB

Make sure you install SP2 and the USB Drivers before you boot with it in if you can. Are you using the latest drivers from Netgear's website?

gosh
kgb

just ditch this usb device and invest in a wirless pci card!!!

prehaps its not your usb device maybe its your actual USB socket?

but either way i still think u should get a lighter and burn the bitch up!

Have to agree with psd on this - USB ports were never really created for this type of activity - you would be much better of fitting a internal wireless card - they are far more stable, reliable and give better range.

I do have a PCI card sitting on my desk. but whenever i use it, it will detect the network but will not connect to any networks. (that is a card problem, not the computer)

I'm trying to get SP2 installed.

Got SP2 installed... that just made it worse!

Every time i plug the card in, i get that blooming Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD)

i dont know what the problem is. i am going into the BIOS to play about. then i am going to flash my BIOS to see if it helps

I have a vishious cycle here...

It wont accept the BIOS i downloaded on my laptop saying "the file is the incorrect size" and the only was apart from that is to use the automatic web update. i can only do that on my PC.

I need to update the BIOS before i can get the wireless network card to work, and i need to card to work before i can update the BIOS.

What am i supposed to do?

I managed to flash the BIOS eventually. But it was no help.

i had a similar BSOD but that was wit windows 2000 it had a problem with my pci wireless card
but that was cz i installed the xp drivers

are u sure ur installing the correct drivers?
DOUBLE CHECK MY FRIEND!

I have given up on the Netgear card as it no longer works on the family computer.

I installed the belkin drivers, and it connected straight off - is this a sign?

Not that anyone is actually following this problem, but it worked fine, every time, until i did windows update. there is an update that is messing it up.

I am on the case to find out which one...

Try the netgear website to see if anything is posted there about an incompatibility problem, they should list it if they know about it?

Thanks Ian,

Im not using the Netgear any more as it caused too many problems, i have moved on to the Belkin, which worked fine until i did windows update.
