USB type Identification

How can I tell fast USB ports from slow USB ports? Which devices need the faster ports? I vaguely remember seeing something that said the slow ones are version 1.1 and the fast ones are version 2.0 and that PC's come with a mixture of types.

Our family's computers are:
HP Pavilion, Windows XP
Sony VIAO, Windows XP
Gateway laptop, Windows Vista
Toshiba laptop, Windows 7.

They both look exactly the same physically, the older 1.1 Ver USB ports are usually on older hardware.. I think USB 2.0 came in about 2001 so any hardware or laptops built and sold after this date should be USB 2.0
So if all your families computers are newish 5 years or younger then they will all be USB 2.0 at least and any newer maybe 12 months or less may even be USB 3.0

Bit of a chore but you could always find out from your mobo manuals or possibly from the bios of the pc's.

don't be surprised to find you have a mixture ... every MB manufacturer cuts some corners.

Check your MB manual, look for the appropriate logos ...
