I need help with an issue I am having with USB.
I have loaded WinXP Pro onto an Advent PC, 1.2gig pcu 128MB ram. The BIOS
is AMI v1.23 (1999 American Megatrends).
The system appeared to be working OK until I realised that the 2 USB devices
connected (a scanner and a cable modem) were not recognised by the system.
Thinking that USB was conflicting with resources somewhere I ran System
Information and noted that USB shares IRQ9 with a Lucent Winmodem (internal)
which is on COM3. Since the modem is not required I disabled it in device
manager. I didn't physically remove the modem (yet) since it's a friends PC
and I dont want to unless it's really necessary.
I shutdown the computer and unplugged these 2 devices. I rebooted and when
XP was loaded I plugged them in - everything worked fine, the software was
loaded and they worked fine. It's important to note here that I didn't try
this with that WinModem enabled, so please don't be distracted by that!
The trouble is, on shutdown and restart, the devices were missing again when
XP booted back up. The only way to get them working is to shutdown, unplug
them, reboot and plug them in again.
Can anyone advise what is causing this?
Just a side thing - when I shut down, XP reports "It is now safe to turn off
the computer" - which must then be done manually. Will updating the BIOS
cure both problems or is this another red herring?
Thanks
