Thanks for the information John. More questions for you, if you don't mind.
How many USB devices are you running on your system? I've found with some
machines that you start to lose voltage with the more USB devices plugged
in. My example was the trying to run a mouse and a smartphone cradle off
the USB keyboard plugs. The solution is simple, a powered USB hub. It sort
of works like a signal repeater, making sure there is no drop in voltage to
affect your USB devices.
Is your new system another OEM (like Compaq, Dell, etc) or a custom built
system that either you or a computer shop put together? Lots of custom
systems that come out have updates available on the motherboard
manufacturer's web sites, both BIOS and system drivers. It's a good idea to
update those. OEM's have update packages you can download and install that
address the same issue. Make sure everything is updated.
Windows Update offers a USB driver update for XP SP1. Go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and run a scan for updates. After the
scan is complete, click on Windows XP in the left hand pane. Windows XP
updates will appear on the left hand pane. Select the update "Recommended
Update for Windows XP SP1 (KB822603)" from the list and install it.
If you don't mind trying out my suggestions and getting back to me with the
results, I'd appreciate it. If these suggestions don't work, we can explore
more solutions.
