USB to PS2 Mouse Adapters

I'm replacing a Microsoft mouse that had a USB connector, but came
with a USB to PS2 adapter which I use to connect to a PS2 extension
cable that connects to the PS2 connector on my box.

I bought a new Microsoft mouse today and when I connect it to the
adapter nothing happens. I have to connect it directly to a USB port
for the mouse to work. Why is this?

I don't have a USB extension and have run out of USB ports, so I need
to do use the existing cable and connection.

The new mouse needs to be able to talk "PS2". The PS2 and USB
protocols and electrical interfaces are completely different. Your
adapter only takes care of the wiring.

Woah there! Just get a USB hub and ditch the ps/2 idea all together.
 
I've got a couple of those adapters.Funny thing is,they aren't
interchangeble.The one I got wiith my mouse doesn't work with my keyboard
ans vice versa.

Maybe the data and clock pins have been interchanged.
