I am using a dell D800 Laptop with Windows XP SP1.
I have a standard Dell PS/2 keyboard I want to use with
my laptop. I am trying to use the converter USB to
laptop PS/2 female to keyboard. As soon an I try to type
anything, the message pops up stating "USB Device not
Recognized" it says that one of the devices on the
machine is malfunctioning. What's up with that? It's a
Microsoft converter. Please help.

Where did you get the converter? Did it come with the keyboard or a mouse?

Most of the USB/PS2 converters I have seen are really a "dumb" device.
PS2 and USB function quite differently, and the actual logic is done in
the device itself.

In other words, using one of the "dumb" devices, your keyboard would
need to support USB. These converters do not make any PS/2 keyboard or
mouse work on USB -- only those that support both. The keyboard/mouse
then recognizes whether it is plugged into a USB port or a PS2/port and
behaves accordingly.

I do not believe the "standard" Dell PS/2 keyboards support both.

Does not the laptop have a PS/2 port on the back???

Most USB devices need to have drivers installed in order for the device to
work correctly.

Hi;
Brutus asks: "Why use 1 USB port for a keyboard"?
Answer: "???Just for the sake of it????...and/or so it goes... that there's
one presently going unused!
Reply: There is not one valid answer.
Reason to the Reply: Save the bandwidth and the power for real NEEDS. You're
surely NOT that fast of a typist that you overload the P/S port!
....and that's it.
RLOL" Next they'll want to convert the unused P/S to USB???
