USB to IDE problem

I have a USB to IDE manufactured by R-Driver ii. It deoesnt work with
Windows XP Home edition. It says USB is recognised but the device is
not. Can anybody help?
 
You have power to the IDE drive? Was the IDE drive functioning
partitioned / formatted before? Do you see it in Disk Management?
 
The IDE drive is from a laptop and runs with the USB cable power. I
can hear the drive running when I hook it up. It was working on the
laptop before. I have seen the Disk management but nothing there. The
problem seems to be that the windows fails to install the new
hardware.

It gives me message that recognised "USB-IDE"
then as "USB Mass Storage "
then it pops up saying "Failed to install new hardware"
reason being that device is not recognised. I dont know how to solve
it.

I usually see this because the drive has failed, the enclosure has failed,
or they aren't connected together well (loose cable). Since you're running
on USB power it could be that it just isn't quite enough. Try a power pack
to power the enclosure.
 
That doesnt seem to be the problem as it worked before with a
different usb-ide and on a different computer. I had it borrowed from
my fiend one time and bought this one for myself.
 
FYI, laptop HDD has 4 pins for power when it is in the motherboard it
gets power from there. When used externally it has not port to plug in
power cord.

That's typical behaviour when the drive isn't jumpered
as master. If it's just taken from the laptop then
of course it is master... Just a hint in case you had
it attached to a PC meanwhile.

I had once attached to a PC with my friends USB-IDE and not used it
for a long time since then. Could anything have changed since then?
 
Apparently your USB adapter should be plug-and-go.

Do check that the jumper is set to Master.. some PCs use Cable Select
jumpering rather than Master-Slave jumpers.

Try it with no other USB devices attached to the same hub, especially
webcam, WiFi or USB powered scanner.

Check that the connector pins on the drive itself are not damaged and are
plugged in correctly to the adapter.
 
That is what I dont understand is if it is plug and play it shouldve
recognised the drive.
How can I set laptop HDD to cable? It doesnt have a jumper or supprot
any such settings.
 
You don't want to set it to Cable Select, it should be set to Master. We'd
need to know the brand and model of the drive to find out what the jumpering
options are, if any. Jumpers can be very small.

Did you ever try testing the drive and adapter on a different computer?
 
The jumper is currently set to master. It is the default setting. I
even called toshiba corp support and confirmed. They also say that
plug and play should work.
 
You are connecting it directly to a USB port on the computer, not to an
extarnal hub? Try unplugging the other USB devices attached to the computer
and see if it makes a difference.

Check if it works with the USB adapter on a different computer ... you're
just wasting your time if the adapter you bought was defective in the first
place. If you can, check if the drive still works on its own. It only takes
a spark from static electricity to ruin a chip on the drive's circuit board.
 
I am connecting to USB on computer directly. I tried my work PC and
the result is the same. I unplgged all other USB devices.

The drive is good, for sure. It previously worked on my laptop and
also with my friends USB enclosure.

I think youre right abt the USB being defective. I am probably wasting
a lot of time. Amazon is not willing to accept return item unless they
find it defective. I would not think they would upon testing on their
own certify it as defective. I would be only wasting more money
mailing it back to them.
