USB to IDE problem

I have an Easy IDE USB to IDE connector so I can read two of my old hard
drives.
After installation, Device manager tells me the USB component and the Drive
are functioning normally, but no drive appers in My Computer.
Either both my IDE drives are suddenly complely U/S, the new Easy IDE unit
is faulty, or there is some other setting somewhere I can't find.
Any help much appreciated.

GlennB:
Access the Disk Management utility (Start > right-click My Computer > Manage
Computer Management > Disk Management) and see if the HDD is listed there
but without a drive letter assignment. If so, assign it a drive letter.

If not listed in DM, shut down the machine and reconnect the device directly
to another USB port and not through a USB hub. (Don't use a USB extension
cable). Ensure that your USB & power connections are secure.

Since the device doesn't work with either HDD it's unlikely there's a
problem with the hard drives.

You didn't say, but did the device work at some point and this problem just
cropped up?

If still no go, any chance of using it on another machine to determine if
the device is defective?

Anna, Thanks for that. Problem sorted.
Even though the manual says it doesn't matter, the drive needs to be set to
master.
I had one set as master, one as slave. Unfortunately, the one set as master
had failed completely. Setting the second as master solved the problem. Thank
for your input.

That's interesting. Just out of curiosity - is the drive in question a
Western Digital? While I've never experienced a problem with WD (or any
other make of HDD) re jumper connection when the drive was connected as a
USB device, a number of users have reported your experience with WD disks.
