Hi,

I am interested in buying one of those USB storage dongle things, you know
the type that plugs into a spare USB port and appears as a drive in My
computer. Does anyone here use one of these?. I am looking for
recommendations. . . .

Most excellent tools. I've got a couple of 128Mb sticks from
http://www.twinmos.com/

If you use XP they're recognised and accessible without having to load any
drivers. Very handy for some of my test tools and for moving files quickly
between me and my neighbours.

For the most part, they are pretty much the same. Some models support
higher USB2 speeds. Generally, Win2K/XP/ME will work with them out of the
box (although 2K/XP might require Admin rights to load the drivers the
first time.) Win98 usually requires a driver supplied with the drive, or
available for download online. Win95 and NT, which don't support USB,
aren't supported. (Win95B only semi-supports USB.)

Hi again,

do you think it's such a *big deal* whether this USB pen drive is USB v1.1
or USB v2.0? I mean anyone who is good with maths, how long would it take
to write a *full* 256MB on on of these things?

Crucial *Gizmo* 256MB USB Flash Drive £44.64 (inc vat) - USB v1.1
SONY *Microvault* 256MB USB Flash Drive £65.79 (inc vat) - USB v2.0

Many thanks

With my Fuji 256M, running USB 1.1, I got about 4:30 (mm:ss) to copy
250M. This is with the pen drive formatted FAT16. You can always reformat
them to FAT32 or NTFS, although copy speed may be different.

Hi,
thanks for feedback. 4:30 secs to write a *full* 250MB/s seems like quite a
long time to me, so I figure that USB v.20 would be allot quicker. . .

Only you can really say how much you care about the time taken
and how often you copy stuff big enough to matter time wise.

It isnt just simple maths because with the USB2 particularly,
you're also limited by the speed of the chips in the device.
