When I was using Win 98 I used to store mp3s etc on a 'QUANTUM FIREBALLP
AS USB DEVICE.
I have now upgraded to WIN XP and am unable to access files stored in
it.
What do i do? I feel that the usb storage adapter is not functioning
with win xp but an icon appears on the taskbar and it says that the
device can be 'safely removed'.

Some help would be really appreciated.

First mistake; upgrading from Win 98 instead of a clean install of full
version XP. You will have to install SP1 from Windows Update site which will
give you USB2.0 support. Then go into your Control Panel and under Disc
management you can get the Disc Manager to recognize the new USB2.0
peripheral disc and it will assign a drive letter. Is your 'storage adapter'
as you call it, USB2.0?....Look in your System in the Control Panel under
Hardware and scroll down to find your USB devices listings. It should show
at least 1 'enhanced' usb device controller.. It might also be necessary to
unplug your external hard drive from your USB while running and then connect
BEFORE you reboot a second time and let XP recognize it as you re start your
PC. ALL these steps are a good idea.
You're welcome.

There's no reason not to do an upgrade; nearly all upgrade
problems are caused by poor preparation. Also, there is no
reason to use the "full" version; you can do a clean
install from the upgrade CD. Also, the OP clearly stated
that he had been using his device under Win 98, so
whether it is USB 1.1 or 2.0 is not an issue. Also, you
refer to the OP's device as a "hard drive"; how do you
know it's not a dongle?
