Hi folks,

Got a brand new Gateway 3.0 GHz desktop today, with XP on it. Working all
fine and dandy, including my USB keyboard and mouse (both MS products).

Installed SP1 from Windows Update. Voila, my USB ports (all 7 or 8 of them)
stopped working.

Huh? What?

What can I do? I have NEVER had to uninstall a SP before, so for the first
time in my life, I didn't choose the "Uninstall SP" option. I'd rather not
have to wipe out the whole thing and re-install everything. How can I get my
USB back???

Hi,

Update the USB patches (USB1.1 and 2.0)from windows
update patches (not in critical updates but in other
recommended updates)

Hope it helps.

Peter

Hi John,

Then, test whether this works.

I just posted same problem a few threads earlier. For me that microsoft
patch didnot help at all still all usb ports are dead. From motherboard
manufacture i got advise "reinstall usb drivers". thats easy to say but what
i think i do (havent tried yet sense iam at work currently) that i go into
device manager and remove all usb related and then either push "scan new
hardware " or restart pc and hope windows will install workiing version. I
only have printer and scanner that wont work but your is little more
difficult with mouse and keyboard.. good luck.

Why pull your hair out put it back in the box and take it back
to Gateway.

i got mine working quit simply. Its question of drivers. some mysterious
purpose SP1 kind of removes those drivers. All i had to do is go to device
manager and chech usb tab there is one saying something about "PCI..." open
that and install drivers for that.
