I've been asked to buy a usb 'splitter' so that two people can use the
same printer..

I don't know if there is such thing..
I had a quick look for something like this but couldn't find anything..
And i don't really want to go out and buy a print server.

Could someone please let me know if there is such thing as a usb
'splitter' that will let me use the same piece of hardware between two
computers?

Thanks..

No such thing that I've ever come across. If the printer has an LPT and a
USB port, you can connect one PC to each port but you must be very careful
that both PCs don't print at once. The best thing to do is network the two
PCs and share the printer that way.

I've never heard of such a thing.

Consider installing the printer on one computer, connecting the
computers together with a LAN, setting up a work group and activating
printer sharing. As far as hardware is concerned, connecting two
relatively new machines may only require a crossover cable. Connecting
three or more machines may require a regular category 5 network cable
for each computer and a single router.

Hi there..

I've never heard of such thing either.. And the only thing that had
come to mind was the options provided.. To share the printer on one
computer and connect the other to it..

Anyway.. Thanks to all for your advise..

Cheers,

I.

Hi there..

The machines are already on a network.. Sharing the printer won't be an
issue..

Thanks,

The other option, if you don't want the "print server" PC on
when the second one prints is to purchase a print server and
connect that to the network and set each PC to print to the
server. Not too expensive ($40-$60) for lower end units
(D-Link, Netgear.).

It is called a Share Switch, a web search for USB printer hub brought
up several sites that sell the Share Switches. I am clueless as to how
well they work but maybe someone else can provide some information on
how well they work or provide a better method.
