I suspect that someone else has tried this, any comments on whether it
will work?
Use a USB sharing device to "expand" a USB port on a printer to two
ports
hook one of them to a print server and the other directly into the
computer.
Make the computer think there are two printers, even though it's the
same printer.
The direct-connect USB will enable the PC to get the ink levels
Other PCs can print to the printer because it's also connected on the
print server.
