Hi,

I have a 8-month old sparingly used UMAX
Astra Net e3420 scanner connected to the USB
port of a IBM ThinkPad running Windows 2000.
Worked great all this time.

Suddenly, it is no longer recognized. Below is the output of my
AdministrativeTools->Computer Management ->System information -->
Components->USB

System Information report written at: 06/27/2004 12:21:47 AM
[USB]

Device PNP Device ID
Intel(R) 82801CA/CAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2482
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2482&SUBSYS_02201014&REV_02\3&61AAA01&0&E8
USB Root Hub USB\ROOT_HUB\4&1BA09391&4
USB Device USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\5&5B74F88&0&1
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Problem

Intel(R) 82801CA/CAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2484
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2484&SUBSYS_02201014&REV_02\3&61AAA01&0&E9
USB Root Hub USB\ROOT_HUB\4&230D24D2&4
Intel(R) 82801CA/CAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2487
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2487&SUBSYS_02201014&REV_02\3&61AAA01&0&EA
USB Root Hub USB\ROOT_HUB\4&34790283&4

The other three entries match the USB ports in Device manager.
In Device Manager->Universal Serial Bus Controllers I have
Intel(R) 82801 CA/CAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2482
Intel(R) 82801 CA/CAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2484
Intel(R) 82801 CA/CAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2487
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

So, essentially the Vendor and Dev ID are both showing up as 0.
I have followed the standard advice to fix the problem as follows.

1)Removed the USB cable connecting scanner to PC.
2)Removed all the Astranet drivers and programs.
3)Uninstalled all USB Hubs from Device Manager
4)Restarted the computer.
5)The USB Hubs got recognized by Windows 2K.
5)Reinstalled the UMAX Astranet drivers and programs.
6)Restarted the PC with the USB cable from the scanner plugged in.
7)The PC recognizes a new device on the USB port but still finds it
to be an unknown device.

I have also tried it on a different PC. Same results.

Any other ideas or does this look like a HW issue?

thanks,
-Farad.

Indeed, this is a problem. Vendor ID and Product ID shouldn't be zero.
The device is identified by these values, and I'm pretty sure that they
should be different for your scanner.

One possible explanation is a failed firmware update in the scanner
(auto-update by the scaner software), a defective firmware ROM or RAM
chip, a defective USB controller in the scanner, a blown USB power fuse
(see below) or a burnt-out scanner lamp (causing the self-test to fail).
Depending on the construction, the VID and PID are written into the USB
controller by the scanner firmware. And in your case the USB controller
(the one in the scanner) never gets the correct values. Maybe because
the firmware 'hangs' and the scanner is questioned before the USB
controller has been properly initialized or whatever.

You could try the following: give the scanner power independent of the
USB connection, so it has time to power-up before the computer detects
it. Some USB devices draw power as soon as they are connected to USB,
some are given USB power the very moment they are detected.
This would lead to another possible error source: did you attach the
scanner to a different port than before, or did you add a HUB between
computer and scanner 9or change the model)?

Of course this only applies if the scanner has no own power connector.

Good luck!
