I have just been trying to fix a bizarre problem on a friend's machine,
which has me baffled.

The machine, which is running Win 98 first edition, has a number of USB
devices, including a canon canoscan N670U scanner and an Olitec PCI V92
Ready V2 modem.

The problem is that, when the scanner is attached, the modem will dial, but
always returns the error "could not connect to remote computer". When the
scanner is not attached there is no problem dialling.

Interestingly, when a connection has been established and the scanner is
then plugged in, there seems to be a hang on the connection for 15-20
seconds, then the line is dropped, with no error message.

I am informed that a similar problem occurs if the USB printer is in use (OK
when it is idle) and the modem is activated.

Have checked for driver updates for modem, scanner and windows updates, but
none are available. No conflicts are showing in device manager. Have tried
moving the modem to a different PCI slot, with no change.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
