USB quirks

There's a little quirk with my Asus P4P800 mobo and the USB setup.

The board has 4 ports, and the case has two more mounted in the top,
which are wired to the mobo headers. I know the ones at the top are
properly connected cos I just printed some stuff to the printer that I
plugged in there to test it.

I'm using WinXP with SP1.

In the device manager, under USB controllers, there are 4 entries for
USB root hub, and 4 with Intel 82801EB reference. I take it these are
the four rear ports.

As I understand it, there should be an entry for Hi-Speed USB, since
SP1 contains the drivers for that? Or do I have to also somehow do
something else to enable it? I tried installing the USB2.0 drivers
from the Asus CD, but it says I should just get SP1, which I already
have.

Also, where are the two top mounted USB ports in that device manager
setup? Do they report somewhere else? I see under "other devices"
there's an entry marked "USB controller", (which has a yellow question
mark against it). There's also an entry there for an "Ethernet
Controller" which also has a yellow question mark next to it. Is that
the top mounted Firewire port? I,m not using it, and have no Firewire
devices, so I haven't connected it internally. If those devices *are*
the top ports, then the USB ones are working, so why the question
mark?

Also, when I plug a USB devices into or out of out of the ports
(either the ones on the top or the back) the system makes the right
noise that this has happened, but I don't get the little balloon in
the taskbar that tells you that you just plugged something in.

Is there something, or possible more than one thing, odd going on
here? It seems as though all the ports are actually working OK (albeit
possibly at 1.1 instead of 2.0, but the system isn't reporting their
use the way I'm used to

Thanks

Brian

Right click on the USB device with the yellow question mark, then select
uninstall to remove it.
Then, right click on any device and select "Scan For Hardware Changes".
The Hi Speed USB controller should then install succesfully.
This is what I had to do with my A7N8x.

Hope this helps...

I did this. If the intended result is that I now have a new USB device
called Standard Enhanced PCI to USB host controller, then it worked!

Thanks

Yup!
That is what you should have for the USB 2.0... "Standard Enhanced PCI To
USB Host Controller".

Glad it worked. I wonder why you have to do this though? Must be a problem
with the way SP1 was written since it apparently happens on all types of
mobos (like my nforce2, and your intel, etc).
