I'm running XP pro on a Tyan S2090 P4, i845 P4 motherboard. It has 2
USB 1.1 ports.

I currently have an IOGear (5) port USB 2.0 card installed in PCI slot
6. When I plugged the card in, the XP autoconfigured and installed
the card.

Device Manager shows a series of drivers installed: (2) Intel
82801BA/BAM universtal host controllers, (3) NEC PCI to USB (IRQs 9 &
11), a USB mass storage device driver, USB printing support, (5) USB
Root Hubs (the first 2 say 2 ports available, the next says printing
support, the next specifies my Epson 1250 scanner, the last just says
5 ports available.

The Inland chipset is a VIA VT6202. The IOGear chipset is covered by
a label.

Question #1: I need the (5) port card in another computer, and I have
a (3) port Inland card to put in its place. Can I simply remove the
one and install the other without problems? Will XP make any
adjustments?

When I installed the IOGear card, I didn't use it's driver CD, but let
XP do the installation. The Inland card also has a driver CD (vs
10.0b). I assume XP has the drivers for each, or may use the same
drivers for either.

I realize its probably better to leave well enough alone, but *maybe*
it's no big deal to swap cards. Or maybe it's risky, or requires
deleting USB drivers from Device Mgr first.

One more question, relating to the newer 2.0 over the original 1.1.
I'm sure the speed gain is important for printers and scanners. Any
noticable gain for things like low res video cams? Or flash card
readers?

Sincere thanks for your time!

I would use device manager to remove the hardware so XP
would have a "clean slate" to work from.

This is going to sound a lot like a Chinese fortune cookie... but....

To avoid potential problems, it is better to uninstall drivers you do not
need, than to clutter your machine's registry and device manager with them.

Your reliance upon XP to do the right thing, is very sporting of you, but it
assumes that you've given it a clean slate to work with. Leaving old
drivers installed, isn't exactly that. It might also complicate future
troubleshooting efforts.

I cannot attest to any huge speed gains in moving from 1.1 to 2.0, but
perhaps there are some. I did it only to meet compatibility requirements of
new hardware. Perhaps others will post their experiences.

Good luck,
