We are a business with approximately 110 Dell Latitude Laptops, D550, D600,
D610 all running XP Pro which is continually updated. For unknown reason
after use for several days the Metrologic bar code scanners attached to the
USB quit working. The USB in device hardware shows no problems or conflicts
but too, when putting in the 3 1/2 in floppy drive which is also USB in
attempts to re-image the machine the the floppy is not recognized. It took
awhile but Dell is replacing Motherboards as a solution but we are at loss as
to what causes the problem. The was at one time a Dell service issue about
scanners not getting enough power to run from the USB ports but the article
has been removed. Any ideas anyone? Appreciate your help, Thank You.

Probably a power issue USB ports supply only 500mA per port. An optical
mouse uses 100mA no telling how much the scanner or floppy uses but if it is
more then that it will not work. Also a laptop will not supply full power
like a desktop if it is running on batteries.
