hello,

I am trying to install a Canon PIXMA iP1500 USB printer on my Win2k
(Service Pack 4) machine. When I install using the Installation CD that
came with the printer, there is a point in the installation process
where it asks me to connect the printer to the USB port and turn it on.
After I do that, the installation tries to look for the printer, hangs
for a while and finally does not find it.

I have other USB devices on this computer that work just fine (DVD
writer and WebCAM).

I can see the USB printer when I use the tab on the bottom right corner
of the screen (an arrow type thing) to make it safe to turn off USB
devices.

I have installed the same printer on another Windows 2000 machine and
it worked fine. The detection of the printer completed in a jiffy.

How do I go about resolving this problem? Is there a component of USB
software that may be missing, or the USB printing capability is not
setup properly?

Thanks in advance!!

My motherboard has USB 1.1 ports. I have added a Belkin USB 2.0 PCI
card to the machine.

I have tried connecting the printer to both the belkin PCI card and the
ports on the motherboard with same result. I do not have any external
hub.

Some more points:

1) I searched for all files with "usb" in their name on the windows
2000 machine, on which this printer works fine and found that there is
a file called usbprint.sys on it, which my other machine (on which the
printer does not work) does not have. I copied this file to the same
location on this machine, but that did not make it work.

2) The "Devide manager" shows a yellow exclamation mark for my printer.
It itentifies it as ip1500, but I guess the yellow flag is because the
driver installation fails.

3) I have read other postings and I believe there should be a USB0
virtual port to which the printer gets attached. I see this port on the
win2k machine where everything working (i.e.with
Start->Settings->printer->ip1500->Properties->ports). On the other
machine, the printer does not get installed at all, so there is no way
of seeing this.

Is my machine missing USB drivers, config files? Is there a way to
repair them?

MS support web site said service pack 4 has everything I need for USB.
I installed service pack 4, and that didnt help either.

help needed :)

thanks,

usbprint.sys be installed, just copying it is not the same. Look for the
installation file usbprint.inf. and copy it to the same folder as
usbprint.sys. Connect the printer to usb. Go to Device Manager and where it
lists the printer with the exclamation, write click on the exclamation and
click uninstall. Unplug the usb.

This part I'm not sure about on 2000.
On XP, when you plug the printer in, the operating system automatically
checks the device and installs usbprint.sys (if the printer uses it). If you
think your printer uses it, you can use explorer and go to the usbprint.inf.
Try right clicking on the file and see if it has a selection for install.
Click to install the driver.
Then go through the manufacturers install procedure for installing the
printer (your cd).
